New steel knives

Here are the first three knife blanks I’ve make using the new 1080 high carbon steel I ordered. My impressions so are are that it cuts and grinds easily, so it must already be annealed.  It is very nice working with nice steel that isn’t rusted or painted and doesn’t need to be unbent.  SoContinue reading “New steel knives”

Wood for handles

Burl is a growth of a tree (almost like a wart) that produces some amazing grains.  This is a neat kind of wood to use for knife handles.  I haven’t found any burl yet, but I did cut this chunk from the roots of  a downed oak tree.  I have read that the root areaContinue reading “Wood for handles”

New goods!

My 1080 steel arrived today from Admiral Steel and I found some great brass yesterday.  I will be using the brass for some bolsters on the knives to come.  I should be able to complete about 16 knives out of the new steel and have about enough brass for that too.

Big news

After much consideration I just ordered some 1080 steel from Admiral Steel.  Using “junk steel” is a gamble and you don’t always know what you have to work with.  This way I will know exactly what quality steel I have and how to make it into a useful knife.  I’ve had some pretty good resultsContinue reading “Big news”
