Check out the new page added

The “From lawn mower blade to knife blade” page is at the top right side of my blog.  This is a new page I added with pictures of how to I take a lawn mower blade and turn it into a good knife blade. Be sure to check it out as I am adding toContinue reading “Check out the new page added”

Incredible

I remembered that a branch fell off our silver maple tree a while back.  This piece measured 1-3/4″ thick, but was completely solid.  The oak had some soft bark and such, but this was nothing but hard maple (maple is one of the hardest woods I can think of).  This took some real effort, butContinue reading “Incredible”

Field testing

I decided to put some knives to the test.  Some traditional sharpness and edge retention tests include cutting rope, cardboard, shaving hair off your arm and chopping through wood. I’ve cut plenty of paper and cardboard now and now have a bald spot on my left arm. I found this 2-1/2″ seasoned oak branch inContinue reading “Field testing”

Twisted

Here are the two knives that I twisted the handles on for some rustic metal knives.  I’ve done some grinding and the edge is looking good on the bottom one.  I did a lot of hammering on the bottom one at the cabin to thin the edge out so the grinding went pretty quickly onContinue reading “Twisted”

What is that???

Here are a couple paring knife blades (lots of work left to finish shaping them) in a piece of rough cut cedar. I tried a new technique that worked very well.  I drilled two holes for the tangs (the width of the steel thickness).  Then, I heated up the tangs and pushed them into theContinue reading “What is that???”

Junkyard Steel

I found this on the internet and it gives some insight into what steel you may find when working with random products you would find at the junkyard. I find this as interesting, but still test my lawn mower blades to make sure it will harden when quenched and if water or oil does aContinue reading “Junkyard Steel”
